Conducting

I received my Master’s degree in Choral Conducting from Boston University, where I studied with Ann Howard Jones. I have subsequently led ensembles comprising musicians of all ages and ability levels in diverse contexts around the world, striving to build community through creative and inspiring musical programming.

From 2011-2017, I served as Artistic Director of the Boston University Choral Society, BU’s only non-auditioned, student-run choral ensemble. During my tenure, I prepared the ensemble for 3-4 concert programs each year, including performances of masterworks with orchestra such as Vivaldi’s Gloria, Bach’s Cantata 150, Fauré’s Requiem, Vaughan Williams’ Dona Nobis Pacem, Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, Ramirez’s Navidad Nuestra, Corigliano’s Fern Hill, Lauridsen’s Lux Aeterna, and O’Regan’s Triptych. Additional programs focused on repertoire from Broadway, film, and world traditions, featuring student compositions as well as collaborations with other Boston University student organizations including Step About Boston, BU’s Irish dance group. Committed to building connections between BU and the greater Boston community through music, I also spearheaded exchanges with schools and retirement communities in the region.

Since 2009, I have conducted ensembles with the Boston Children’s Chorus, curating programs designed to forward the award-winning organization’s mission of inspiring social change by creating high-quality and thought-provoking musical experiences for singers and audiences alike. Leading singers ages 7-18 in concerts on topics related to racial justice, gender equity, and the environment at high-profile local, regional, and international venues, I also facilitated collaborations with ensembles and institutions including American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.), Boston Pops, Opera Boston, Emmanuel Music, Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Harvard University Choirs, Rockport Music, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and Boston Public Library.

Deeply committed to performing works of living composers and taken from living traditions, it has been my privilege to rehearse and perform works from choral, orchestral, opera, pop, hip-hop, folk, and world music repertories during engagements with Henry Purcell Society of Boston, Boston Opera Collaborative, Opera Hub, Boston Public Schools, Secondary School of Fine Arts (Cambodia), and Manado State University Singers (Indonesia), among others.

You can view videos of my performances below; please contact me if you’d like to view rehearsal footage or repertoire lists.

Piano

I attended Davidson College on a scholarship for piano performance, and while there developed a passion for collaborative piano and accompanying. Here I am performing Villa-Lobos’ Piano Trio No. 2:

I was the winner of Davidson College’s Concerto Competition in 2008; you can listen to me play Saint-Saëns’ Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Davidson College Symphony Orchestra here:

Singing

I perform and collaborate regularly as a vocalist. Trained in Western classical technique, I especially love singing Renaissance and Baroque repertoire, but I’ll happily sing anything and everything.

Here is a recent impromptu voice/dance experiment with a group of dancers from the Royal University of Fine Arts in Phnom Penh, led by the amazing choreographer Belle Sodhachivy Chumvan:

In Cambodia, I study classical and popular Cambodian songs and vocal technique, and I have been privileged to learn from and collaborate with some of the country’s culture-bearers and as well as its rising young talent. Here I am singing “ឱផ្ទៃស្រុកខ្មែរ (Oh Ptey Srok Khmer),” a song about the beauty of the Cambodian country and its people, with the talented young performer Nou Samnang playing ចាប៉ី (chapei).

Arranging

Sometimes, I arrange songs for choir!

Here’s my treble-choir arrangement of the Irish folksong “She Moved Through the Fair,” to which I set an Advent text. I’m conducting from the piano here, with the youth choir from All Saints Parish, Brookline.

Transcription and Engraving

I work as a freelance music transcriber and engraver.

I recently had the privilege of collaborating with musician and activist Jane Wilburn Sapp on the transcriptions and engraving of compositions and arrangements she has created in collaboration with communities during her long and distinguished career. The 25 songs will be published in the forthcoming Let’s Make a Better World: Stories and Songs by Jane Sapp (Brandeis University Press 2019) - you can read more about the publication here. Be sure to watch for this important resource for music teachers and choral conductors!
